what
Work. Work. Work. Seems that is my main focus nowadays. Guess that's what I get for being the boss.
I have a lot of ideas for this little outlet of mine, but little time for execution anymore. Did post a couple of items lately, to decidedly little fanfare.
Juggling as much as I can as of late, but motivation needs a swift kick in the pants. Working on that.
Need to spend more time creating content instead of consuming it, but I feel like if I step back from the social networking I'm somehow neglecting things. Sad really.

It'd be great to hear some feedback on what I've posted so far this year. Seems like this part of DA has dropped off in recent times. I guess it is what it is.

what
I wasn't going to continue as Premium here, but changed my mind literally at the last minute. I find I am spending much more time on other sites, but figured what the hell, what's one more year, right? I will say one thing DeviantArt, you're not Ms. Right, but Ms. Right-Now. When there's an appropriate alternative to knock you off the block (RedBubble, 500px.com, Tumblr in some regard, someone else?) then you're days are likely numbered. Perhaps that is just my POV.

what
I'm doing my best to keep up with the Photo and Movie challenges I've set for myself. The Photo one is doing much better than the Movie one at the moment, but I will catch up.
Nothing else special is really going on in my part of the world, so I thought I'd see what's up with everyone else. As I mentioned last time, I have been spending more time on Tumblr and RedBubble (links below) so if you'd like to comment your link or usernames on either, I will go check them out and probably add you there.

other
Everything else is pretty much status quo. Work is going well, I've decided to move on from another venture I have been involved in for the last year or so, and I am now refocusing on DotStarStudios on contract work. We'll see where it all goes shortly. Life is more about making me happy now and hopefully the pieces are falling into place. If you have something positive you're proud of recently, please share.

what
Couple of things of note I wanted to share:
- Thanks to bfoflcommish for extending my paid membership a bit longer!
- I have decided to do both a Photo A Day challenge and to have a movie challenge as well, to watch 366 movies I've not watched before for 2012
- One of my favorite shots, "The Road to Nowhere", was featured in a small gallery show back in December. Now I'd like to have more of that, so that is a goal for 2012 as well.
- I find I am spending more time on Tumblr and RedBubble than here as of late. Please feel free to add me in one or both of those locations, if you like (links below).
- A new Series of the 50PhotoThrowdown was just launched and for this series, I am offering a cash prize. Go check it out and join the group to participate!

I hope you had a Happy Holidays and the new year is starting out on a good note for you!

Not much else to report here. The bulk of my contract work is evolving (always looking to book more work) but I'm still working it as best I can. 2011 was a slow year there, but that may be due to moving up in the world on my 9-to-5 job (yay me!). I have other things cooking too - always staying ahead of the curve if I can. We'll see where 2012 takes me!

Want to know how you know you're a "success" around here? People steal your work, post it elsewhere as their own and maybe even makes a few bucks on it. Pageviews, llamas, comments, faves - it's all child's play. When you see one of you're images (with the watermark removed) floating around Tumblr with other people taking credit, that's when you know you've made it. This is what I feel like I've learned as of late regarding what people post here and other sites like this.

Well, rest assured, I'm not quite a "success" around here. I keep trying. It's all I can do, right? It's not like I can post some random picture of my boobs (cause I ain't got none). I digress ...

Hope you all are having a great weekend. If not you better damn well start, it's half over.

other
If you haven't been paying attention, and I know most everyone hasn't - I haven't been posting much lately. This is partly due to life getting in the way, but the bigger part is my A100 has essentially bit the dust. It was a good run, but when it gets kicked out of your hand there's not much else that can be done. I'm looking at getting something new shortly (need to be more liquid than I am at the moment) but the hope is soon. Not being able to take pictures is killing me on the inside. More details as they become available.

what
OK, so my last journal was a bit of a rant and I had it up for a while. It just bothered me to even see it anymore, so it's gone from the front page.

I've been pondering something as of late that was posed to me: Why is it so important to have other people like what you do? Can't it be enough that you enjoy what you do? (Gotta love the insight of a woman that can keep a guy grounded, right? Yep, that was my wife that said that.)

At first I was sorta hurt. Of course I'd like to be recognized - we all do. And let's face it, while I appreciate every fav and watch I get here, if my deviation exposures were search results, I'd be the penny keywords on AdWords. But seriously - I don't even know what possessed me to think anyone would appreciate what I do beyond myself and those already in my circle. Hell, half my family and friends don't even get my sense of humor ... why should this be different? Perhaps this site helped me believe I was more than I really am - just some regular guy with a creative outlet. Sure, I may get lucky and find something sorta neat once in a while, but by and large I need to remember that I do this because I love doing it. I'll probably never make any real money at it (thank goodness I have a day job) nor will I gain any acclaim. I forget that I've always loved photography and art in general - it's easy to do these days where it's so easy to share everything with everyone and so everyone does. The sad part - I don't even post close to 1/10th of what I take or draw. I am very picky with what I put out there and only choose things I really like myself. As compared to a lot of people here, I am the exception for sure. This is why I am quite defensive of anything I post, I suppose.

With that in mind, going forward, I will likely be even more picky on what I post here, there and everywhere else. Maybe it will mean I spend even less time in front of a computer (yeah right!). If you're still reading this, feel free to leave a comment, complaint, insult, joke, URL link, etc. or whatever you feel like ... just so I know you're still paying attention. That'd be great.

Been traveling a lot more lately for work. I hope that means good things, but we will see. Tampa in a couple of weeks, San Francisco again the week after, maybe Vegas in August (though that will be more for me than anything). Just got back from New York again. Hard to keep up with all the DA stuff plus other sites with all that activity but I'm trying. Summer is here and the time is right to be in other places I suppose. We'll see where it all takes me.

I'll be posting the next round of the 50PhotoThrowdown soon as well. Should be more fun than you can shake a stick at. I promise.

what
The complaining around here, frankly. I swear, every third journal I see around here anymore is someone pissing and moaning on how horrible this place is. And it seems to be a lot of people who have been here for a long time. I mean, there are somethings that aren't as awesome as they used to be and there are some things that could be better, but what are you doing about it other than being pissy and threatening to leave? I've been considering if I have outgrown this site myself because I don't think I've really grown much as an artist but I think instead of bailing, I am going to reconsider why I feel that way and what I can do to change that feeling. Then I see all the pissing and moaning and it makes me want to say 'why bother'. If Mr./Mrs. Awesome photographer/artist/etc. can't thrive in a place like this and you're 10x more popular than I've ever been, then how the hell is that supposed to make me feel? Why the fuck am I even trying? Bet you didn't think about the impact of your words on others, right? I'll live and get over it, but know that there may be others that are more fragile and will take it much more personally. Just food for thought the next time you open you're mouth.

Instead of worrying about "me, me, me" perhaps take stock in what you're doing to encourage others. That's what the community is about. If you're here solely to peddle your wares and could care less about others, then leave. Don't threaten - just go. I am sure you will be just as 'successful' on other venues. Otherwise, shut up, be a leader and make an impact. Whether you like it or not, there are some people who actually look up to you or admire you.

OK, enough soapbox for one journal.

Back to the more fun stuff:
I've said it before but I'll say it again - I want to doing more Comments. If there is something you'd like feedback on, leave a comment below on this journal with your request and include your link(s). I can even do critiques if you so desire. Please, no more than 3-5 deviation links, and don't be lazy and point me at the whole gallery, I want direct links. Tell your friends. I don't even expect anything in return. Thanks!

Been working a lot lately and traveling a lot. Means there's less time for me. Just got back from New York a week or so ago and headed to San Francisco tomorrow. It's a happy problem; at least I get to enjoy the food and it's not on my dime. Not much new on the contract front which is fine for the moment. Just trying to stay ahead of the curve.

I can't wait for summer and nicer weather. Perhaps some things will slow down and I'll have some more time for me. I have lots of ideas already cooking and it looks like I have some accomplices this year. Stay tuned!

Speaking of which, with the new year comes a new round of the 50PhotoThrowdown. I think the initial test of the concept was good so I'm opening it up to anyone that wants to participate and offering prizes. Go check out the group and join, plus tell your friends -- the new round starts Jan 1!

Small Rant

sayin
If you're not drinking on Saturday night, you won't have anything to talk to Jesus about on Sunday morning.
- one of the best quotes I've heard all week and it was on TV

what
I think I've learned two very important pieces of information around here lately:
- no one cares about anyone but themselves
- egos are fragile and would prefer to be stroked above all else

On the first point - One of the major reasons I came here was to get feedback and improve myself. I feel like I've done some of that on my own (or I hope so) but I feel like I've gotten very little feedback. It seems we've lost some of the community element that I used to love about this place. I had hoped Groups would encourage a resurgence but alas it has not. Submitting to a Group has become quite difficult for someone like me - I am not elite, I know this. However, when I see things my 6 year old could make accepted and something I did not accepted, it makes me pause to question. Also, if you're not approving a submission, then at least give some reasoning or even better, actual feedback (and not a cookie cutter response). I understand you get a metric crap ton of submissions, but what the hell did you think was going to happen? Everybody wants exposure and to belong (otherwise they wouldn't be here). If that's the case, then limit the submissions. Or have others help and pitch in. You shouldn't be phoning it in.

Which brings me to point two - In one group I am a part of, I've decided to start providing feedback as a contributor. I feel I should walk the walk, so I have been giving constructive feedback when I decline a submission (note: I am one of more than a few, so I don't have sole approval). I thought it was going well, but at least two people have left the group, right after a deviation was declined and feedback was given. Now, I have been ripped in a critique, did that dissuade me? No, I took into account what was said for the next time. Hell, I've been declined via form response (see #1 above) - did I quit the group? No, I plan to keep trying. Would I like to hear how good of a job I've done on a deviation (no matter how non-useful this is)? Of course, but I don't go seeking 'attaboys'. But clearly others do and that's all they want to hear. If I have offended you with my comments, I am sorry. I only sought to be helpful. It's not going to stop me from giving more feedback to others.

OK, enough of that. I got it off my chest. Moving on. No one is still reading anyway.

My day job has been keeping me busy and I am headed back to NYC next week. On top of that, I've been trying to market DotStar Studios some more. In this economy, it's hard to find good contract work believe it or not, but I don't think I've done too bad considering my marketing budget is less than $100. We'll see how it all pans out.

On an unrelated note, football (both NFL and Premiere League) is back. This is a good thing and will provide some small distraction, I hope.

Just wanted to announce to a wider audience to let people know that I have created a new group here on DA. Sort of like the the "100 Themes" group, it's a photography group based on themes, but this one will have a time limit and be competition based. Go visit the group here:

:icon50photothrowdown:

The group was created as a result of a challenge/competition between dssken and bfoflcommish which kicked off on June 15th. For the first challenge (of hopefully many), Ricky and I are going head-to-head but anyone who wants to participate alongside us can certainly do so -- in fact, we encourage it. We're looking to work out the kinks with this before opening it to a wider group as well as see how much interest there is for such a thing. Just keep in mind that as a member all we ask that you are willing to vote in the polls that will help us determine a winner at the end of this. We'll have another 6-month competition, similar format, starting in December or January that will be more wide open but more details on that later.

Check out the group for more info and join us already!

It's May already, which is awesome. Much as I like living in Colorado, when it's gloomy and cold out, it does nothing for my spirits and certainly nothing for my art. The good news is we only see about 60-80 days of that nonsense and sun for the rest. Can't wait to get out and do some more photography. We'll see what else comes to fruition. Speaking of which, I will likely post more photos than I have before, hopefully of some cool stuff. Fair warning!

Not much else to report. Vacation was great - took lots of pictures, none that anyone here would like to see I'm sure (if you do, let me know and I'll Facebook you) and I got to go to the Mets game while I was in NY. Other than that, got a few items in the contract work hopper, but nothing too extensive. Summer may be busier, but for now I am just enjoying doing things I want to. Perhaps I can now work on some more t-shirt ideas, but we'll see. Going with the flow a lot more now. "We'll see" is my new mantra.

what
So yeah, I am in a better place now. I got over myself, or at least mostly. I think I need to more admire what I see here instead of trying to be inspired by it. Sure, every once in a while something here may spur me to create something, but inspiration will largely exist elsewhere for me. I started coming here as an outlet, a channel for my creativity. I haven't felt very creative for a while and I am not completely sure why. I need to find my creativity again to make what I do fun again ... and I have already started with the logos I recently uploaded. Will what I do be any good? Who knows. I just need to keep doing what I like and see what happens.

other
One thing I am actually looking forward to is a change in surroundings, if even temporarily. I have a week of vacation in Orlando, Florida with the family coming in a couple of days and then shortly thereafter headed back to NYC again for work for a few days. Should be a good change of pace.

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.

what
Halfway through the month of February and the plan is going well. As mentioned before, I have decided to do my part to get some exposure to work around here. I have been posting at least one item per day to my Facebook page (450+ friends) and to both of the Twitter's I have (another 200 or so followers). The key here is to get some unsung folks some exposure so keeping that in mind, I've been rather picky with what I have selected - not going to repost anyone who clearly doesn't need my assistance.

Come the end of the month, I think I am going to post all the thumbnails for the items this month. Not sure if I will carry it beyond February, might just save it for an "annual lovefest" each February. Heh.

So, one other thing I wanted to bring up was the notion of Groups. First off, let me say I love them. I even like the journal/deviation stacks that came with them. I have noticed some trends though ... some are using it to unite a common bond and encourage camaraderie ... others, well, I feel like they are using it as a means to declare their "eliteship" and separate themselves from the rest of the folks by declaring only those that pass their rigorous standards need apply/submit/etc. That's fine - means I'll never be a 'cool kid' I suppose. Not that I have been rejected or anything - I mean why bother when you know the answer will be NO. Hell - I know some people on here are elite - these folks get more pageviews on a piece of art in one day than I have on all my page/art in 5 years. This elitist mentality, however, certainly lowers the fun factor in the new Group feature for me, plus now I feel like it will drive a further gap between those who know how and those who want to learn and grow. I guess it's par for the course, if the Internet has taught me one thing, it's full of people who think their superior to others. This is why I have been seeking out groups (and co-founding one) that is much more inclusive. This is where the fun will come in for me and others. Will all the art be awesome? No. Will it be fun to be part of something and maybe learn or teach a thing or two? Hell yes. In my mind, this is truly what Groups were intended for, let's keep that in mind.

what
Couple of months in to the new job and I'm still enjoying myself. Hitting a stride there and may be expanding things a bit more soon. Really happy about that.

In case you missed it, I did relaunch the Dotstar Studios site before the end of the year. Be sure to check it out. Feel free to give me feedback on it too if you like. I plan to get more interest in the side business this year, including hopefully gaining some more clients.

So, for the month of February, I have decided to do my part to get some exposure to work around here. I will be posting at least one item per day to my Facebook page (450+ friends) and perhaps one or both of the Twitter's I have (another 200 or so followers). To that end, if you would like one of your pieces featured or know of someone who is deserving, send me a link (commenting on this journal is probably easiest). The key here is to get some unsung folks some exposure for the great work they do so keep that in mind, but I really want to post some awesome work regardless.

Due to that, no features in this Journal. Perhaps that will return in March.

what
First and foremost, my best friend bfoflcommish :iconbfoflcommish: just hooked me up with another year on DA. Thanks a lot Ricky!

Plus, after getting not one, but two offers at the end of October, I accepted a position with Nielsen Online and I couldn't be happier. I get to work with many of my former clients again and what they do is really interesting, so work is no longer 'just a job'. Google's loss is someone else's gain!

Lately working on relaunching the Dotstar Studios site and I will have that wrapped up this week. Be sure to check it out. I have a FB fan page and a Twitter too, so add those if you like (they get more attention than this journal for sure). Tell you what, you do me and I will do you. Just comment on this Journal and I will add myself to whatever you list. Thanks!

Lastly, I still need to post shirts on the CafePress site, but the website above took precedence. Soon, I promise.
